Care
Immersion and water level
The Floating Water-plantain must be immersed in shallow water, between 10 and 40 cm deep. Maintain a constant water level in your basin or pond to prevent the roots from drying out. In submerged pot cultivation, regularly check that the substrate remains saturated with water.
Light and exposure
Choose a sunny to semi-shaded location, with at least 4 to 5 hours of direct light per day. Insufficient light slows growth and reduces flowering. Excessive shade promotes excessive foliage development at the expense of flowers.
Substrate and rooting
Use a rich, muddy substrate, such as a mixture of potting soil and silt, or natural pond sediment. The Floating Water-plantain appreciates slightly acidic to neutral soils. Ensure the substrate remains stable so that roots can establish firmly.
Nutrition and fertilization
Moderate fertilization is generally sufficient, as the plant draws its nutrients from the aquatic environment. In poor basins, apply a balanced aquatic fertilizer in spring. Avoid excess nitrogen, which promotes algae at the plant's expense.
Maintenance and cleaning
Regularly remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain good water circulation. In late autumn, cut back the plant to allow the root system to rest. Control expansion by gently removing invasive shoots, particularly in small ponds.
Prevention and treatment
The Floating Water-plantain is generally robust. Watch for filamentous algae which can smother it: increase water circulation or use mechanical solutions. In case of rot, check water quality and reduce decomposing organic matter.
Optimal light for flowering

Did you know?
The Floating Water-plantain is an aquatic species of growing rarity in Europe, listed as critically endangered in several regions. Once common in shallow waters, its disappearance is due to the destruction of wetland habitats and agricultural intensification. Growing this plant in your garden pond becomes a gesture of heritage preservation, contributing to the safeguarding of fragile and ancient aquatic flora.
Where to buy it
Best planted in spring or autumn, away from frost and heatwaves. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September, October.
