Care
Watering and immersion
Baldellia ranunculoides is an aquatic plant that must be permanently submerged. Position it in shallow water, between 5 and 15 cm deep. It also tolerates constantly wet to very marshy soils. Ensure good water circulation to avoid complete stagnation and overly thick silt deposits.
Light exposure
This plant prefers direct sunlight or partial shade. It develops best with at least 4 to 6 hours of daily light. In very shaded conditions, flowering will be reduced and growth slowed. Install it in a bright area of a pond or along the edge where it receives direct rays for part of the day.
Substrate and soil
Baldellia ranunculoides grows in soil rich in organic matter, slightly silty or loamy. Adding planting soil or compost before installation promotes its establishment. The substrate must remain constantly wet to submerged; ordinary well-draining soil works if watering is regular.
Nutritional input
This aquatic plant benefits from moderate fertilizer application in spring, during the growing season restart. Prefer a diluted liquid fertilizer for aquatic plants, applied according to product recommendations. Excess fertilizer promotes algal proliferation; stay measured and respect dosages.
Pruning and maintenance
Regularly remove dead or yellowing leaves to maintain a nice shape and limit rot. After flowering, trim back faded stems slightly. This plant remains compact and doesn't require severe pruning; maintenance is limited to regular cleaning of senescent parts.
Health and problems
Baldellia ranunculoides is generally hardy. The main issues are rhizome rot from stagnant water or excessive winter moisture, and algae invasion in overly nutrient-rich water. Ensure minimal water circulation, limit fertilizer and remove decomposing organic debris to prevent problems.
Did you know?
Baldellia ranunculoides gets its common name from its resemblance to Ranunculaceae plants, although it belongs to the Alismataceae family. Historically, shallow water plants like this one served as food and medicinal resources in European riverside cultures, though their use is poorly documented today. Its natural habitat, temperate marshes, makes it a useful species for ecological restoration of wetland areas.
Where to buy it
Best planted in spring or autumn, away from frost and heatwaves. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September, October.
