Watering and aquatic environment
Water plantain is a strictly aquatic plant that thrives in humid or partially submerged environments. Plant it along the edge of a pond, marsh or watercourse with constantly moist roots or in 10 to 30 cm of water. No additional watering is necessary if the site is naturally humid.
Light exposure
Choose a location in full sun or partial shade for abundant flowering. The plant tolerates semi-shaded areas well but will flower less profusely. Protect it from strong winds along the water's edge.
Soil and substrate
Water plantain accepts any substrate rich in organic matter: silt, loam or aquatic potting soil. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is ideal. Enrich the pond bottom with a layer of well-decomposed compost when planting.
Fertilizing
Moderate fertilization is generally sufficient thanks to the natural richness of aquatic environments. In poor ponds, apply a specialized aquatic plant fertilizer in spring. Avoid excess nitrogen which promotes excessive foliage development.
Maintenance and removal of dead parts
Regularly remove yellowed or damaged leaves to maintain appearance. After flowering, eliminate faded flowers and, in late autumn, cut stems flush with the water. Dividing every 3 to 4 years rejuvenates the clump.
Health and prevention
Very robust, water plantain is rarely subject to disease. In stagnant water, overpopulation of foliage can create anaerobic zones: ensure good water circulation. Watch for the appearance of aphids or small aquatic insects, easily controlled by good ecological balance.

Water plantain was once used in European traditional medicine as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory plant. Its oval leaves resemble those of terrestrial plantain, hence its name; it is a key plant in wetland areas, stabilizing banks and providing an ideal habitat for aquatic insects and amphibians.

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
