Care
Constant Immersion
Your perfoliate pondweed must remain completely submerged in fresh water. Check that the water level in your pond or aquarium stays stable and constant. Significant depth variations can weaken the plant. Maintain a minimum depth of 20 to 30 cm for good growth.
Aquatic Light
This plant thrives in indirect or diffuse light. In an aquarium, expose it to 8 to 12 hours of light daily. In an outdoor pond, partial shade to full sun is ideal. Insufficient light slows growth and weakens the foliage.
Bottom Substrate
Plant it in a nutrient-rich substrate: fine sand, gravel, or peat mix. A light addition of organic matter promotes rooting. The plant also absorbs nutrients dissolved in the water.
Aquatic Nutrition
In an aquarium, balanced aquatic fertilizer (macronutrients and trace elements) stimulates growth. In an established outdoor pond, natural enrichment is often sufficient. Dose moderately to avoid filamentous algae.
Pests and Algae
Perfoliate pondweed is generally robust. Watch for green or brown algae that may cover it. Excess nutrients or improper light encourage this problem. Clean the leaves regularly and balance your water parameters.
Did you know?
Perfoliate pondweed is remarkable for its transparent leaves crossed by visible veins—they appear 'perforated,' hence its Latin name *perfoliatus*. This unique adaptation helps it resist freshwater currents better and optimizes photosynthesis in aquatic environments. It's an excellent pond or aquarium plant for cold-water ecosystems.
Where to buy it
Best planted in spring or autumn, away from frost and heatwaves. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September, October.
