Care
Submersion and water circulation
Berchtold's pondweed must remain completely submerged in a body of water or aquarium. Ensure regular fresh water circulation exists to prevent stagnation and the buildup of organic matter. Slight surface agitation promotes the oxygenation essential for its development.
Light
This aquatic plant prefers moderate to good light exposure, at least 8 hours per day. In an outdoor pond, a semi-shaded position works well. In an aquarium, lighting of 10 to 12 hours daily stimulates steady growth.
Substrate and bottom
Pondweed grows easily on various substrates: gravel, sand or silt. A light bed of fine gravel keeps the plant in place without smothering it. It is not demanding regarding soil composition and adapts to natural or artificial bottoms.
Mineral nutrition
In a well-balanced natural pond, fertilizer is generally not necessary. In a closed aquarium, apply a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer once or twice a month if growth slows. Aquatic plants also draw nutrients from the water and suspended organic matter.
Pruning and maintenance
Regularly cut the longest stems to encourage branching and prevent overcrowding of the water body. Remove dead or browned parts to maintain a neat appearance and reduce the organic load. Light pruning every 4 to 6 weeks is sufficient under optimal conditions.
