Care
Watering
Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly during the growing season (spring-summer) and reduce slightly in winter. Prefer soft or rainwater, low in lime. Occasionally mist the foliage to increase ambient humidity.
Light and exposure
Place the fern in partial shade or under indirect, filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, which burns delicate fronds. Overly dark exposure slows growth; aim for a balance with soft, diffused light.
Substrate and soil
Prepare a rich, aerated, and well-draining mix of potting soil, peat or pine bark, and perlite. This fern appreciates slightly acidic to neutral soil. Good drainage prevents root rot while retaining moisture.
Fertilizer
Fertilize moderately during the growing season (April to September) with a balanced or fern-specific fertilizer, diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in winter when growth slows. Avoid excess fertilizer, which can damage fronds.
Pruning and maintenance
Regularly remove dead, yellowed, or damaged fronds above their point of attachment. This promotes vigor and aesthetic appearance. Gently clean debris accumulated at the plant's center without forcing.
Diseases and pests
Watch for mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids, especially indoors. Overly dry air increases infestation risk; good humidity helps prevent it. Isolate any affected plant and treat with appropriate methods (soapy water, neem if needed).
Did you know?
The fern Macrothelypteris torresiana is named after Spanish botanist Luis Torrès, a 19th-century explorer of Southeast Asia. Its characteristic fronds, finely divided and slightly velvety, make it a favorite among tropical fern collectors for its airy aesthetics and ability to thrive in humid environments.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
