Care
Watering
Keep the substrate consistently moist without waterlogging. Water regularly, especially during the growing season and in warm climates. Reduce watering slightly in winter if the plant slows its growth. Prefer soft water or rainwater to avoid mineral buildup.
Light Exposure
Place the fern in indirect light, away from direct sun rays which can scorch the fronds. It appreciates partial or dappled shade. Filtered light through a white curtain works very well indoors.
Substrate and Drainage
Use a light mix enriched with peat or coconut fiber and organic matter. Ensure satisfactory drainage to prevent root rot. Regular compost additions promote plant vigor.
Pruning and Maintenance
Regularly remove dead or damaged fronds at the base. Gently clean the foliage with a damp brush to remove dust without damaging delicate tissues. No thickening pruning is necessary.
Fertilization
Apply weakly concentrated fertilizer diluted every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing period (spring-summer). Stop in autumn-winter. Ferns tolerate excess fertilizer poorly; favor a regular and gentle approach.
Diseases and Pests
Watch for spider mites and scale insects, particularly in dry air. Ventilate regularly and maintain sufficient humidity. In case of infestation, clean with diluted soapy water or isolate the plant temporarily.
Did you know?
Christella dentata belongs to the Thelypteridaceae family, an ancient lineage of ferns dating back over 100 million years. Its fronds bear delicately toothed pinnules and its sori (reproductive structures) in costal position make it a typically tropical fern, long used in Asian gardens as a refined ornamental plant.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
