Expert tips
The key tip
The common mistake
The pro's trick
Care
Watering
Water regularly during the growing season to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. In winter or dry climates, space out waterings by letting the soil surface dry slightly. Reduce water in the cold season to encourage abundant spring flowering.
Light
Choose a sunny or very bright location for optimal flowering. At least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal. In very hot climates, light afternoon shade can prevent leaf scorch.
Pruning
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact, balanced shape. Remove dead or diseased branches as needed. Annual moderate pruning stimulates branching and rejuvenates the shrub.
Fertilizer
Apply a balanced fertilizer monthly during the growing season (spring-autumn). Reduce or stop feeding in winter. A fertilizer slightly rich in potassium promotes better flowering.
Soil
Plant in rich, well-structured, well-drained substrate enriched with organic matter. Avoid waterlogged conditions that can cause root rot. Mulch helps retain moisture and keep the soil cool in warm climates.
Diseases and pests
Watch for scale insects, whiteflies, or spider mites, especially in dry indoor conditions. Powdery mildew can affect foliage in warm, humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation and avoid stagnant humidity to prevent problems.
Did you know?
Duranta erecta is prized in tropical America for its remarkable golden fruits that persist long after the flowers fall, adding extra ornamental value. Its nickname 'Cayenne Vanillia Tree' in French refers to its slender form and historical popularity in the gardens of colonial Caribbean estates, where it symbolized horticultural refinement.
Where to buy it
Best planted in autumn so the roots settle in before summer, or in early spring once the frost has passed. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, October, November.
