Care
Light exposure
Stiff yellowcress prefers full sun or partial shade. It tolerates slightly shaded areas well but will flower more abundantly in sunlight. Plant it in an airy location to prevent stagnant moisture.
Watering
Water regularly during the growing season to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Once established, this plant tolerates moderate drought. Reduce watering in winter.
Soil and planting
Plant in well-drained, calcareous or neutral soil rich in organic matter. Avoid overly wet or compacted soils. Adding compost at planting time promotes establishment.
Fertilizer
Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support growth. Moderate feeding is sufficient; stiff yellowcress is not very demanding.
Pruning and maintenance
Remove spent flowers to extend blooming and prevent excessive self-seeding. Cut back damaged or dried foliage as needed. Light pruning after flowering maintains a compact shape.
Diseases and pests
Like all brassicas, watch for aphids and seedpod flies. Rust and downy mildew can occasionally appear in very humid conditions. Promote air circulation and avoid prolonged foliage wetness.
Did you know?
Stiff yellowcress is a historic culinary ally: its young leaves were long consumed as wild greens in central Europe, particularly in spring. The genus Barbarea owes its name to Saint Barbara, the patroness of gardeners and herbalists in the Middle Ages.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
