Care
Exposure
Place wall rue in part shade or partial shade, sheltered from direct intense rays. This fern appreciates cool and well-ventilated areas, naturally found against north-facing walls or among rocks. It also tolerates full shade if humidity levels are adequate.
Watering
Water regularly to keep the substrate slightly moist, without excess. Indoors or in a pot, check that water doesn't pool at the bottom. During prolonged dry spells, misting the fronds contributes to the plant's wellbeing.
Soil and substrate
Choose a light, well-draining, limestone-based substrate: fern potting mix blended with sand or perlite works perfectly. In a rock garden or stone wall, the site's natural limestone will suffice, provided water drains quickly.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer is not essential. In a pot, a diluted balanced foliar feed in spring can support growth, but use restraint: this fern prefers natural, nutrient-poor environments.
Cleanup and pruning
Regularly remove dead or damaged fronds at the base to maintain a neat appearance. No formal pruning is needed; the plant naturally keeps a compact, spreading form.
Diseases and pests
Wall rue is generally not prone to diseases. Watch for mealybugs and spider mites in dry or indoor environments. Good air circulation and adequate humidity prevent most problems.
Did you know?
Its Latin name 'ruta-muraria' literally means 'rue of walls': this small fern has naturally colonized cracks in old walls and fortifications across Europe for centuries, particularly those of medieval castles. It symbolizes botanical resilience and adaptation to hostile mineral environments.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
