Care
Light exposure
Dwarf eelgrass thrives in well-lit zones with natural light. In its natural coastal habitat, it benefits from daylight filtered through the water. In an aquarium, provide moderate to intense lighting (8-10 hours per day) to promote photosynthesis without encouraging filamentous algae.
Hydrology and water quality
This aquatic plant requires constant immersion in water, ideally slightly brackish (mineral-rich). Maintain gentle water circulation to prevent stagnation. Dwarf eelgrass tolerates natural variations in salinity and temperature, but prefers cool waters (10-20°C).
Substrate and anchoring
It roots in fine sediments, sandy or slightly muddy, enriched with organic matter. A loose substrate 5-10 cm thick allows rhizomes to establish well and spread. Adding fine gravel or specialized sand promotes lasting root establishment.
Nutrients
In natural environments, nutrients come from the water and substrate mineralization. In a closed tank, moderate additions of iron and micronutrients can support growth, particularly in oligotrophic conditions. Avoid excess nutrients that encourage undesirable algae.
Management and pruning
No pruning is necessary under natural conditions. Regularly clean leaves of epiphytic algae and suspended debris. In an aquarium, remove damaged or decomposing parts to maintain plant vigor and water quality.
Prevention and pests
Dwarf eelgrass remains generally hardy but suffers from algal competition and excessive epiphytism. Water too rich in nutrients or insufficient light slows its growth. Work to limit filamentous algae proliferation by optimizing the light-nutrients balance and water circulation.
Did you know?
Dwarf eelgrass plays a critical ecological role: its meadows form natural nurseries for young fish and crustaceans, while stabilizing coastal sediments. It has inspired ecologists to recognize 'seagrass meadows' as ecosystems as productive as terrestrial forests, silently capturing carbon and oxygen beneath the surface.
Where to buy it
Best planted in spring or autumn, away from frost and heatwaves. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September, October.
