Care
Light exposure
Plant wood vetch in partial shade or semi-shaded conditions. It thrives in open woodland areas or forest edges, tolerating moderate light levels. It can also grow in full sun depending on your region.
Soil
It prefers rich, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. Improve depleted soil by incorporating compost or well-rotted manure before planting. This legume fixes atmospheric nitrogen, naturally enriching the soil.
Watering
Keep the soil moist during growth, especially in the first months after planting. Water regularly during prolonged dry spells. Once established, wood vetch tolerates dry periods better thanks to its deep root system.
Pruning and training
Little intervention is needed. You can lightly cut back stems after flowering to encourage compact growth. Let it climb on a support (branch, stake) or grow as a ground cover depending on your needs.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer is rarely necessary thanks to its nitrogen-fixing ability. A moderate application of compost in spring is sufficient to maintain good vigour.
Health and pests
Wood vetch is generally robust. Watch for possible aphid attacks in warm, humid conditions. Prolonged excess moisture can promote root rot: ensure good soil drainage.
Did you know?
Wood vetch is a remarkable example of root symbiosis: it harbours bacteria (Rhizobium) in its root nodules that convert atmospheric nitrogen into assimilable forms. This property makes it a valuable plant for restoring depleted soils in temperate forest ecosystems.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
