Care

Watering

Cultivated vetch tolerates drought well once established thanks to its deep root system. Water regularly during active growth phase, especially on light soil. Reduce watering in summer if rainfall is sufficient.

Exposure

Plant in full sun for optimal growth and generous flowering. It also accepts partial shade, but biomass production will be lower.

Soil and preparation

Vetch adapts to most soils but prefers well-drained, moderately fertile ones. It enriches the soil with nitrogen through its symbiosis with nodule bacteria. A moderate addition of organic matter is sufficient.

Pruning and training

In forage or ornamental cultivation, light cutting stimulates branching. Let the plant develop freely to maximize flower and foliage production. Remove dead parts at the end of the season.

Fertilizer and nutrition

Undemanding in nitrogen thanks to its symbiotic fixation. A moderate application of phosphorus and potassium promotes flowering and robustness. Avoid excess nitrogen which would favor foliage at the expense of flowers.

Diseases and pests

Generally robust, vetch can be affected by powdery mildew in humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation. Watch for aphids in spring; a soapy water spray is sufficient in case of light infestation.

Did you know?

Cultivated vetch has been grown since antiquity, notably by the Romans, who used it as a cover crop and forage for animals. Rich in nitrogen, it played a key role in sustainable agriculture well before the modern term, allowing farmers to naturally regenerate soil fertility between harvests.

Where to buy it

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
