Care
Exposure
Slender mullein loves full sun for optimal and abundant blooming. It also tolerates light partial shade, but its silhouette remains more compact and flowers less generously. Plant it in a spot sheltered from strong winds that could damage its slender stems.
Soil and drainage
Prefer well-drained, poor to average soil that's alkaline if possible. This plant is very tolerant and thrives even in rocky or stony terrain where other plants would struggle. Prolonged moisture can cause root rot: avoid heavy clay soils without improvement.
Watering
Once established, slender mullein is very tolerant of drought. Water regularly during the first summer following planting to encourage rooting. After that, natural rainfall is usually sufficient; increase watering slightly during prolonged heat waves.
Pruning and maintenance
Remove faded flowers as they appear to extend blooming and prevent overly vigorous self-seeding. In late winter or early spring, cut the stems completely at ground level after the leaves fall. No formative pruning is necessary: the plant grows naturally in a columnar shape.
Fertilization
Slender mullein doesn't require significant nutrient additions; it grows well in poor soil. A light application of compost or balanced fertilizer in spring is ample support for its growth and blooming.
Pests and diseases
This plant is not very prone to pests and diseases if drainage is correct. However, watch for powdery mildew and root rot in conditions of excessive moisture. Good spacing between plants and adequate air circulation prevent most problems.
