Care
Light exposure
Plant sea spurrey in full sun for optimal growth and flowering. It tolerates very well positions exposed to sea spray and coastal winds. Choose an airy, bright location with no shade.
Soil and drainage
This plant requires very well-drained soil, preferably sandy, gravelly or rocky. It tolerates poor and even saline soils, typical of coastal environments. Avoid waterlogged conditions which would cause root rot.
Watering
Water moderately and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Once established, sea spurrey is very drought-tolerant thanks to its fleshy foliage. In coastal climates, rainfall is usually sufficient.
Fertilizing
No fertilizer is necessary. This plant grows naturally in poor soils and tolerates nutrient deficiency very well. Enriching the soil could promote excessive growth at the expense of flowering.
Pruning and maintenance
No structural pruning is essential. Simply remove dead or wilted parts to encourage branching and extend flowering. Pinch young plants to make them bushier.
Pests and diseases
This plant is rarely affected by diseases. In overly wet conditions, it may suffer from root rot or damping off. Ensure exemplary drainage and good air circulation to prevent these problems.
Did you know?
Sea spurrey is a botanical relic of Mediterranean coasts, capable of surviving in highly saline environments thanks to its succulent tissues that accumulate salt and water. It has adapted to the extreme conditions of salt marshes and regenerates degraded coastal ecosystems, making it a valuable ally for ecological restoration of coastal habitats.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
