Care

Watering

Figwort appreciates moist soil but without waterlogging. Water regularly during the growing season, especially during prolonged dry spells. In winter, reduce watering as the plant goes dormant.

Light

Place figwort in partial shade or a bright location, ideally sheltered from the strongest direct sun in summer. It tolerates the dappled shade of woodland areas and remains vigorous in such conditions.

Soil and preparation

Rich, moist, and well-draining soil is preferable. Enrich the soil with compost at planting time. Avoid compacted or excessively chalky soils. The plant develops well along the edges of naturally damp areas.

Pruning and maintenance

Remove spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming. In late autumn, cut back the stems to ground level after the first frosts to promote vigorous regrowth in spring.

Fertilizer

An annual application of compost in spring is quite sufficient. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizers that would promote foliage at the expense of flowering.

Diseases and pests

Figwort is generally robust and not particularly susceptible to common pests. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases in case of excessive humidity. Slugs may feed on young leaves in spring.

The name "figwort" comes from ancient medicine: in the Middle Ages, people believed this plant cured scrofula (swollen lymph nodes) based on the doctrine of signatures, because its seed pods resemble small inflamed glands. Although this theory is now obsolete, the plant remains popular with gardeners who appreciate authentic wild herbaceous plants.
