Care
Watering
Water regularly during the growing period (spring-summer), ensuring optimal drainage. Reduce watering in autumn and winter. For young potted specimens, keep the substrate slightly moist without excess. Once established in open ground, the tree tolerates moderate dry periods.
Exposure
Place your rain tree in full sun for optimal growth and generous flowering. A location sheltered from strong winds is recommended, particularly in coastal areas. In temperate climates, winter protection is essential if temperatures drop below 10°C.
Soil and planting
Choose fertile, well-structured and properly drained soil. Enrich with compost or well-decomposed manure at planting time. Avoid overly compact or waterlogged soils, which promote root rot. Slight acidity to neutrality is ideal.
Fertilizing
Apply balanced fertilizer (NPK) in spring and early summer, once or twice monthly depending on vigor. For potted specimens, split applications. Prefer slow-release fertilizer for established trees in open ground. Stop all feeding in autumn to encourage dormancy.
Pruning and trimming
Perform light pruning after flowering to maintain balanced shape and improve air circulation. Remove dead or diseased branches in late winter. On young specimens, guide growth by favoring a strong main structure. Avoid severe pruning, which weakens the tree.
Diseases and pests
Watch for scale insects and spider mites in dry climates. Powdery mildew can appear in excessive humidity and poor air circulation. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Regularly clean fallen leaves at the base to limit infection sources.
Did you know?
The rain tree (Samanea saman) bears this poetic name because its leaves close before rain, creating a denser shadow effect that long fascinated botanists. In tropical America, this majestic tree was considered sacred by pre-Columbian civilizations and remains a symbol of abundance and generosity in many Latin American cultures.
Where to buy it
Best planted in autumn so the roots settle in before summer, or in early spring once the frost has passed. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, October, November.
