Expert tips
The key tip
The common mistake
The pro's trick
Care
Watering
Water regularly during active growth (spring-summer), allowing to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter to encourage flowering. Use room temperature water, preferably non-calcareous.
Light
Place the plant in indirect light, away from direct sun rays which can scorch the stems. An east or west-facing window is ideal. It tolerates partially shaded locations well.
Soil
Use a well-draining mix: cactus potting soil or balanced mix enriched with perlite. Ensure the pot has a drainage hole. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer
Fertilize every 15 days or so during the growing period (spring-summer) with diluted balanced fertilizer. Stop fertilizing in autumn and winter to respect the plant's dormancy.
Pruning and maintenance
Pinch the stems after flowering to encourage branching. Remove damaged or dead segments. No severe pruning is necessary; this plant has naturally compact growth.
Pests and diseases
Watch for mealybugs and red spider mites, particularly in dry conditions. Root rot can occur if overwatered. Good drainage and regular ventilation prevent most problems.
Did you know?
Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri, also called the 'Easter Cactus,' naturally flowers around springtime, making it a traditional gift in German-speaking cultures. Unlike desert cacti, it's a tropical epiphyte that grows naturally on trees in tropical rainforests, which explains its need for more moisture and preference for indirect light.
Where to buy it
Best planted in spring or autumn, away from frost and heatwaves. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September, October.
