Care
Exposure
Plant the Neglected Cinquefoil in full sun to encourage abundant yellow flowering. It tolerates partial shade but will flower less profusely. Choose a bright, well-ventilated location.
Soil and drainage
This plant appreciates well-drained soils, even poor or stony ones. It adapts well to dry, lean soils and dislikes waterlogged conditions. Improve drainage if your soil is heavy by adding sand or gravel.
Watering
Once established, the Neglected Cinquefoil is very water-efficient. Water moderately during active growth, especially during prolonged drought. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings and reduce significantly in winter.
Fertilizing
No fertilizer is necessary in adequate soil. Excess nitrogen promotes foliage at the expense of flowering. A light application of well-decomposed compost in spring is more than sufficient.
Pruning and tidying
Remove dead stems and deadwood in early spring. You can rejuvenate the plant by cutting it back to 10-15 cm from the ground every 3 to 4 years. Pinch young stems to encourage branching.
Health and pests
This Cinquefoil is very resistant and rarely affected by major diseases or pests. Powdery mildew may appear if excessive humidity is combined with poor air circulation. Ensure good drainage and free air movement.
Did you know?
The Neglected Cinquefoil is among the "neglected" plants of European flora: long confused with other similar species, it was officially distinguished from more common Cinquefoils only relatively recently. It has been traditionally used in folk herbalism due to its tannin content, although its medicinal properties remain moderate compared to other Cinquefoils.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
