Care

Exposure

Plant phacelia in a sunny or partially shaded location for optimal flowering. It tolerates slightly shaded spots but flowers more abundantly in full sun. Avoid overly enclosed or poorly ventilated areas.

Watering

Water regularly during the growth and flowering period, keeping the soil moist but without excessive standing water. Reduce watering once the plant is well established. Prefer watering at the base to avoid foliage diseases.

Soil

Install phacelia in well-draining, rather light soil that isn't too rich. It adapts to moderately poor soils and prefers neutral to slightly acidic pH. A moderate compost addition at sowing is generally sufficient.

Fertilizing

A limited application of balanced fertilizer during active growth is sufficient. Excess nitrogen promotes foliage at the expense of flowering. Naturally fertile soil reduces or eliminates the need for additional fertilization.

Its name 'cicutaria' refers to the resemblance of its leaves to those of hemlock, although phacelia is harmless.

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
