Care

Watering

Persicaria tolerates fresh soil well but handles drought nicely. Water regularly during active growth, especially in summer. In containers or light soil, watering twice a week is generally sufficient. Reduce watering in autumn.

Light exposure

Choose full sun or partial shade for optimal flowering. The plant tolerates partial shade well but will flower less abundantly. It appreciates well-lit positions that enhance leaf coloration.

Soil

Persicaria adapts to practically all soil types: sandy, clay or loamy. However, it prefers fresh, well-drained soil. Enrich the soil with compost at planting time to encourage initial growth.

Pruning and cutting

Pinch young plants to encourage a compact, branched shape. In late autumn, cut the plant back to ground level for winter cleanup. You can also remove spent flowers to extend flowering.

Fertilizer

Light fertilization at the start of the season is sufficient. Apply a balanced, diluted fertilizer once a month during active growth. Avoid excess nitrogen, which would favor foliage at the expense of flowering.

Diseases and pests

Persicaria is very resistant. Watch for aphids in very mild, humid conditions. Powdery mildew can exceptionally appear on foliage in confined atmospheres. Ensure good air circulation and avoid foliage watering.

Persicaria gets its common name from its resemblance to peach tree leaves (persica in Latin). Once used in folk medicine, it has become an appreciated ornamental garden plant valued for its colorful flower spikes and ease of cultivation, capable of establishing itself spontaneously in damp areas like cultivated ground.

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
