Care

Light exposure

Yellow floating heart thrives in full sun for abundant flowering, requiring a minimum of 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Insufficient light reduces flower production. In very hot regions, partial shade can prevent excessive surface dehydration.

Watering and immersion

This aquatic plant must remain constantly immersed or floating in fresh water. Check water level stability and top up if evaporation is significant. In a pond, it will do with existing water; in a tub, partially renew the water each week to prevent debris decomposition.

Substrate and planting

Plant the rhizome in soil rich in organic matter (pond compost or silty mix) at the bottom of the pond or in aquatic baskets. A depth of 30 to 150 cm suits depending on variety. Floating leaves will naturally develop at the surface.

Fertilization

Apply specific aquatic fertilizer in late spring and mid-summer to support growth and flowering. Follow recommended dosages to avoid water eutrophication. Moderate addition is enough as pond water already contains nutrients.

Pruning and maintenance

Regularly remove dead or rotting leaves accumulating at the surface or in deeper water. No structural pruning is necessary; simply limit proliferation if the plant becomes too invasive by thinning stolons or removing excess rosettes.

Pests and diseases

Yellow floating heart is generally hardy in well-balanced aquatic environments. Watch for scale insects and aphids on aquatic plants during summer inspections. Stagnant water or excessive debris promotes rot; maintain good circulation and ecological balance in your pond.

Did you know?

Yellow floating heart has been highly valued in Asia for centuries for its ornamental qualities and features in traditional Japanese and Chinese water gardens. Despite its name, it is unrelated to true water lilies (Nymphaea): its smaller leaves and delicate flowers make it unique. In Europe, this plant was long confused with the local yellow water lily, creating quite a botanical mix-up until the nineteenth century.

Where to buy it

Best planted in spring or autumn, away from frost and heatwaves. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September, October.
