The key tip

Plant bulbs in autumn in well-drained soil from September onwards; they need winter cold to flower. Let the foliage yellow completely after flowering before cutting it back, otherwise the flower will lack vigor the following year.

The common mistake

Cutting green foliage as soon as flowers fade: you starve the bulb which can't rebuild its reserves for next year.

The pro's trick

Plant them in small tight groups (5-7 bulbs) rather than singly; they have far more impact and naturalize much better.

Care

Exposure

Cyclamen daffodil thrives in full sun or partial shade. Favour a sunny location with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for generous flowering. In very hot areas, light afternoon shade is beneficial.

Watering

During growth and flowering, keep the soil moderately moist without waterlogging. After flowering, gradually reduce watering. In winter and dormancy, minimal watering is sufficient. Bulbs fear persistent excess moisture.

Soil

Plant in well-draining soil, slightly rich in organic matter. A mixture of potting soil and sand improves drainage. Avoid compact or waterlogged soils that cause bulb rot.

Fertiliser

Apply balanced or potassium-rich fertiliser at the start of growth. One application is usually enough. After flowering, light feeding helps build up the bulb's reserves for next year.

Pruning and cutting

Remove faded flowers without cutting the foliage. Let the foliage yellow naturally before removing it (6 to 8 weeks after flowering): it recharges the bulb. Cut it to ground level once completely dried out.

Pests and diseases

Daffodils are generally robust. Beware especially of bulb rot from excess moisture and slugs that can damage leaves. Check bulb condition before planting and ensure good drainage.

Did you know?

Cyclamen daffodil owes its name to the reflex shape of its crown, recalling the cyclamen. This Iberian species once bloomed in secret in the mountains before being introduced to Northern Europe in the 19th century. Today, it's one of the earliest and most expensive of the genus, highly prized by collectors.

Where to buy it

Plant the bulbs in autumn for spring flowering. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: from September to November.
