Care
Light exposure
Plant your muscari in full sun or partial shade for optimal flowering. In partial shade, the plant still flowers but less abundantly. Avoid heavily shaded areas that slow growth.
Watering
Water regularly during spring growth until the end of flowering. Once the foliage dries in early summer, drastically reduce watering. In autumn and winter, the soil should remain dry: bulbs cannot tolerate stagnant moisture.
Soil and planting
Plant bulbs in autumn (September to November) at a depth of 5-8 cm, spaced 10 cm apart. Choose well-drained soil and lighten it if necessary with sand or gravel. Moderate lime is beneficial for this species.
Fertilizer
Apply balanced or potassium-rich fertilizer at planting time. A light spring fertilizer application can enhance flowering, but remains optional if soil is fertile.
Pruning and maintenance
No pruning needed. Let the foliage yellow and dry naturally so the bulbs replenish their reserves. Remove spent flowers if desired, but it's not essential.
Diseases and pests
Muscari is very resistant. Rot can occur with excessive winter moisture: check drainage. Few pests bother it; good air circulation is usually enough to prevent problems.

The grape muscari, also called 'grape hyacinth,' was already cultivated in Persian and Ottoman gardens since antiquity. Its Latin name literally means 'musky,' as its tiny cobalt blue flowers release a light sweet fragrance comparable to musk. Today, it naturalizes spontaneously in our gardens and can form magnificent blue carpets in spring after a few years.

Plant the bulbs in autumn for spring flowering. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: from September to November.
