Care
Light Exposure
One-flowered pyrola thrives in partial shade or light shade, as in its natural habitat beneath firs. Avoid direct sun, which dries out the substrate too quickly. A quiet location away from foot traffic is ideal for this discreet plant.
Watering
Keep the substrate constantly moist but without waterlogging. Water moderately during spring and summer growth with soft or rainwater. In winter, reduce watering but don't let the soil dry out completely.
Soil and substrate
Use a very acidic mix made of blonde peat, sphagnum moss, and leaf mould. Light drainage is necessary to prevent root rot. This plant forms a symbiosis with mycorrhizal fungi: respect this natural relationship by repotting only rarely.
Pruning and maintenance
No pruning is required. Simply remove spent flowers to prevent exhaustion. Gently clean leaves of accumulated plant debris, without damaging the delicate foliage.
Fertilizer
Avoid chemical fertilizers, which disrupt the mycorrhizal balance. A very light annual application of well-decomposed leaf compost on the surface is more than sufficient for this undemanding plant.
Diseases and pests
This alpine plant is rarely affected. In conditions that are too warm with stagnant humidity, fungal rots may occur. Ensure good air circulation and avoid excessive moisture on the foliage.

The one-flowered pyrola fascinates botanists with its single fragrant flower: it typically bears just one flower bud that emits a light sweet fragrance in early summer. This plant lives in close symbiosis with underground mycorrhizal fungi, making it very difficult to cultivate outside its natural mountain or forest habitat. Its scientific name Moneses literally means 'one flower' in ancient Greek.
