Care
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during active growing season. Japanese stilt grass appreciates moisture without waterlogging. Gradually reduce watering in fall and winter.
Light exposure
Place in a bright location, ideally in full sun. Partial shade is tolerated but reduces vigor and ornamental appearance of the clump.
Pruning and cutting
Cut the clump back to ground level at the end of winter, before spring growth resumes. This deciduous grass grows rapidly after pruning and forms a dense, upright silhouette.
Soil
Prefer soil rich in organic matter, well-drained and slightly acidic. Incorporate compost or peat at planting time to encourage establishment.
Fertilizing
Apply balanced fertilizer in spring as growth begins. Avoid excessive nitrogen which promotes loose foliage at the expense of structure.
Diseases and pests
Generally robust. Monitor excessive moisture which can promote root rot in poorly drained soil. Few other pests or diseases reported in cultivation.

Despite its ornamental charm in Asia, it has become a major ecological concern across the Atlantic.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
