Care

Watering

Variegated alfalfa is a very drought-resistant plant once established. Water moderately during planting and the first few weeks, then gradually space out watering. Under normal conditions, rainfall is sufficient for its development.

Exposure

Install the plant in full sun for optimal flowering and better vigor. It tolerates light shade without major issues. Avoid overly humid and poorly drained areas.

Soil and drainage

Alfalfa prefers well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil, and tolerates chalky soils. It adapts to poor, undemanding soils. Improve drainage if the terrain is too compact or clayey.

Pruning and cutting

Prune lightly after flowering to stimulate bushy growth and possible reflowering. Remove dead or damaged stems in late winter. Light pruning is enough; this plant requires minimal maintenance.

Fertilizing

Alfalfa fixes atmospheric nitrogen through its symbiotic bacteria and needs only minimal fertilizing. A moderate application of compost in spring is sufficient to support good growth.

Diseases and pests

This species is generally very robust. Occasionally monitor for aphids or caterpillars in case of infestation, but problems remain rare. Excess moisture can promote root rot: favor good drainage.

Did you know?

Variegated alfalfa is an exceptional melliferous plant: bees favor it to produce clear and flavorful honey. Historically, this legume also served as livestock forage and as an intermediate crop to enrich soils with nitrogen, before the era of synthetic fertilizers.

Where to buy it

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
