Care
Watering
Water moderately during the growing season, especially during prolonged dry spells. Once established, polymorphic alfalfa tolerates drought well thanks to its deep root system. Avoid excess water, which promotes fungal diseases.
Exposure
Place the plant in full sun for optimal flowering and vigorous growth. It thrives in hot, sunny south- or west-facing exposures. A minimum of 6 hours of direct daily sunlight is recommended.
Soil
Grow in well-drained soil, even if poor or limestone-rich. Polymorphic alfalfa adapts to sandy to clayey soils. Make sure there is no water stagnation, especially in winter.
Pruning and maintenance
No formal pruning is necessary. You can cut back the plant lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Remove any dead or damaged stems in spring.
Fertilizer
Undemanding, polymorphic alfalfa requires only minor fertilization. Thanks to its nitrogen-fixing root nodules, it naturally enriches the soil. A light annual application of compost is sufficient.
Diseases and pests
Generally robust, it can suffer from rust or mildew in very humid and stagnant conditions. Ensure good air circulation and optimal drainage. Pest attacks remain rare in the garden.
Did you know?
Polymorphic alfalfa is a melliferous plant appreciated by bees and pollinators. It has long been cultivated in Mediterranean agriculture as nutritious fodder for farm animals thanks to its protein richness. Its name 'polymorphic' reflects its remarkable ability to produce pods of very varied shapes depending on growing conditions.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
