Care

Watering

Water regularly during the growth period (spring-summer) by maintaining moist but well-drained substrate. Reduce watering in autumn-winter, allowing it to dry slightly between waterings. Preferably use soft or rainwater, as this orchid is sensitive to lime.

Light exposure

Place the plant in bright, filtered light, away from direct sunlight which may scorch the delicate foliage. A window facing east or north works well. Avoid deep shade which slows flowering.

Substrate and repotting

Use a light and airy epiphytic orchid substrate (pine bark, pumice, sphagnum). Drainage must be excellent to prevent root rot. Repot every 2 to 3 years, preferably after flowering.

Fertilisation

Apply diluted orchid-specific fertiliser every two weeks during the growth period. Reduce or stop fertiliser in autumn-winter to promote rest and flowering.

Pruning and maintenance

Remove dried flower stems after flowering by cutting just above a node. Regularly clean the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and promote photosynthesis.

Diseases and pests

Watch for mealybugs and spider mites, which are common in dry environments. Good hygiene, regular aeration and moderate ambient humidity prevent most problems. Avoid excess moisture which promotes root rot and fungal development.

Did you know?

Maxillaria lutescens belongs to a genus of epiphytic orchids whose name 'Maxillaria' comes from the Latin 'maxilla' (jaw), as the curved sepals and petals resemble an open jaw. These miniature orchids are prized by collectors for their delicate and fragrant flowering in the depth of winter, bringing a touch of tropical poetry to temperate interiors.

Where to buy it

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
