Care
Watering
The moriche palm appreciates constant soil moisture. In a tropical climate, natural rainfall is usually sufficient. In container cultivation or in drier climates, water regularly, especially during the growing season, keeping the substrate moist without waterlogging it. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
Light Exposure
Place the moriche palm in full sun or partial shade. In its natural habitat, it often grows in semi-shaded areas of humid tropical forests. Good light exposure promotes more robust growth and denser foliage.
Soil
The moriche thrives in rich, humid, well-structured soils similar to its natural conditions (alluvial and peaty soils). Use a well-draining substrate enriched with organic matter (potting soil, coconut fiber, compost). Adding peat or leaf mold improves water retention.
Fertilizing
Apply a balanced fertilizer or one slightly rich in potassium once or twice a month during the growing season (spring-summer). Regular feeding supports frond development and overall vigor. Reduce applications in fall-winter.
Pruning and Maintenance
No structural pruning is necessary. Simply remove dead or damaged fronds as they appear. Occasionally clean the foliage to promote better photosynthesis. Take care never to cut the terminal bud.
Diseases and Pests
In humid tropical climates, watch for root rot related to excess moisture or insufficient drainage. Mealybugs and spider mites can affect foliage in dry conditions. Good air circulation and balanced humidity limit these problems.
Did you know?
The moriche palm is a key species in Amazonian ecosystems, particularly in marshy areas (moriche actually means marsh in indigenous languages). Its fruits are an essential nutritional source for local populations and wildlife, while its leaves have provided building and weaving materials for centuries.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring, once all risk of frost has gone. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: from April to June.
