Care
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the spring growing period. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, but don't let the substrate dry out completely. Gradually reduce watering after flowering and through summer.
Light exposure
Prefer partial to light shade, as you'd find in a natural woodland. The plant tolerates shaded areas well, but flowers best with a few hours of indirect light. Protect it from intense direct afternoon sun.
Soil
Plant it in soil rich in organic matter, well-draining but moisture-retentive. Enrich with compost or peat moss at planting time. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal.
Pruning and maintenance
No pruning is necessary. Let the foliage wither naturally in autumn. Simply remove any dead or damaged parts in spring before new growth begins.
Fertilizer
A generous application of well-decomposed compost in spring is plenty. You can add a balanced organic fertilizer at the start of the growing season to support flowering.
Diseases and pests
Very hardy and rarely susceptible to disease if moisture conditions are respected. Watch for slugs in very wet conditions. No major pest problems are common.
Did you know?
Starry false Solomon's seal gets its name 'stellatum' from its creamy white flowers arranged in starry clusters. Long used by Indigenous peoples of North America as a medicinal plant, it remains a favorite today in temperate woodland gardens for its delicate spring blooms.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
