Magnolia soulangeana is one of the oldest horticultural hybrids intentionally created: it was born in early 19th-century France as a result of crossing two Asian magnolias. Its spectacular flowers, which bloom before the leaves even appear, inspired French botanist Soulange-Bodin, whose masterpiece bears his name.
Where to buy it
Best planted in autumn so the roots settle in before summer, or in early spring once the frost has passed. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, October, November.
