Immersion and humidity

Shoreweed thrives in very moist environments, partially submerged or emerged depending on the season. In a basin or tank, keep the substrate constantly waterlogged. In an aquarium, it tolerates complete immersion but prefers a shoreline area where its roots remain in water. Adjust the water depth to your objective: a few centimeters are sufficient for emerged growth.

Light

Place shoreweed in a sunny to semi-shaded location. It appreciates well-lit areas to develop properly, especially if you're aiming for regular flowering. A minimum of 4 to 6 hours of natural light daily is recommended.

Substrate and anchoring

Use a fine substrate rich in nutrients: blonde peat, fine sand, or specialized aquatic soil. Shoreweed has a delicate root system that needs good anchorage and soft texture. Overly coarse substrate risks destabilizing the plant.

Nutrition

In natural aquatic environments, shoreweed draws its nutrients from water and substrate. Supplement with diluted liquid fertilizer for aquatic plants during the growing season (spring-summer) if the substrate becomes depleted. Stay moderate: excess nitrogen promotes algae.

Maintenance and pruning

No pruning is necessary. Simply remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain aesthetics and prevent rot. Occasional pinching promotes denser branching if desired.

Health and prevention

Shoreweed is very robust and rarely subject to disease. Watch for root rot in case of prolonged waterlogging in anaerobic soil. Good water circulation and soil aeration prevent most problems. Filamentous algae can compete with young plants: limit excessive nutrient inputs.

Shoreweed is a botanical relic from the Quaternary seas, once widespread along the coasts of northern Europe. It has adapted to the shores of acidic lakes and streams, and remains an excellent biological indicator of oligotrophic freshwater ecosystem quality. In France, it is protected in several regions as its presence reveals a pristine freshwater ecosystem.

Where to buy it

Best planted in spring or autumn, away from frost and heatwaves. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September, October.
