Care

Light exposure

Loesel's Liparis appreciates a semi-shaded to partially shaded position, sheltered from direct afternoon sun. In very sunny areas, the leaves may bleach or dry out. Choose a bright but discreet spot, such as at the woodland edge or under light cover.

Soil and substrate

This terrestrial orchid requires constantly moist to wet soil, rich in organic matter and slightly acidic to neutral. Prepare a substrate based on leaf mold, sphagnum and perlite to ensure good drainage while retaining moisture. In pots, maintain high humidity.

Watering

Keep the substrate constantly moist without standing water saturation. Watering should be regular, especially during growth (spring-summer). During autumn and winter rest periods, reduce watering slightly while avoiding complete drying out.

Fertilizer

Apply diluted orchid or flowering plant fertilizer once a month during the growing season (March to September). Use a balanced or slightly nitrogen-rich formulation. Stop fertilizing in autumn and winter.

Pruning and cutting

No pruning is necessary. Remove only faded flowers after blooming and eliminate dead or damaged leaves at the end of autumn. Allow the foliage to dry naturally before winter dormancy.

Diseases and pests

Loesel's Liparis dreads standing excess moisture which promotes fungal and bacterial rot. Ensure good air circulation and avoid water splashing. Slugs and snails can damage young leaves; inspect regularly and remove them manually.

Did you know?

Loesel's Liparis is one of Europe's northernmost orchids and is strictly protected in several countries. Its decline is linked to the drying out of wetland areas, and it appears on red lists in many regions. This small discrete orchid, once more common in alkaline peatbogs, has become an important symbol of relict habitats facing disappearance.

Where to buy it

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
