Care

Sunlight

Place this daisy in full sun, ideally for a minimum of 6 hours per day, for generous and sustained flowering. It tolerates partial shade but produces fewer flowers. Avoid dense shade, which would slow its growth.

Soil and planting

Prefer well-drained, ordinary and light soil. This plant accepts poor and even rocky soils. The important thing is to avoid water stagnation in winter, which causes root rot. A supply of coarse compost in spring is sufficient.

Watering

Water moderately when planting and during prolonged dry periods. Once established, the plant is very drought-resistant. In winter, reduce watering drastically as it dislikes standing moisture.

Pruning and maintenance

Deadhead regularly to extend flowering and stimulate new blooms. In autumn, remove dead foliage after frost. A simple cut back to ground level in late winter rejuvenates the clump.

Fertilizer

This hardy perennial does not require rich fertilizer. A supply of compost or light balanced fertilizer in spring is more than sufficient. Avoid excess nitrogen, which favors foliage at the expense of flowers.

Diseases and pests

Generally robust, it can be affected by powdery mildew in case of excessive moisture and poor ventilation. Aphids may occasionally settle on it. Favor good air circulation and treat with soapy water if needed.

The Siberian daisy was long confused with other Leucanthemum species in Europe, until its precise scientific description in the nineteenth century. Its name 'Leucanthemum' means 'white flower' in Greek, while 'ircutianum' pays homage to the Irtysh region in Siberia, the cradle of this hardy species.
