Care
Exposure
Prefer a bright location, in partial shade or full sun depending on your climate. Spring vetchling adapts well to areas with some shade. Avoid overly hot and dry exposures in summer.
Watering
Keep the soil moderately moist in spring during flowering. Once established, the plant tolerates relative dryness well. Water at the base without wetting the foliage to prevent fungal diseases.
Soil and planting
Plant in well-drained soil, rich in organic matter, slightly chalky. An amendment with compost at planting time promotes establishment. This legume naturally enriches the soil with nitrogen.
Pruning
Remove spent flowers to extend flowering. After foliage disappears in autumn, clean up dead stems. Light pruning in spring can balance the plant if needed.

Undemanding, spring vetchling only needs a balanced fertilizer application in spring. Its association with root bacteria allows it to fix atmospheric nitrogen.
Diseases and pests
Generally very hardy and not prone to diseases. In overly wet soil, watch for root rot. Aphids may occasionally colonize it: a water spray is often enough to eliminate them.

Spring vetchling was once cultivated in monastery and château gardens for its delicate flowers that mark the arrival of spring. Its name "vernus" literally means "of spring" in Latin, as it is among the first multicolored flowers to bloom after winter in central Europe.
