Care
Sunlight
Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Wild lettuce tolerates diffuse light well and appreciates at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight daily for good vitality. In very hot climates, some afternoon shade helps limit soil dryness.
Watering
Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. During the first year of growth, set up watering 2 to 3 times a week depending on climate. Once established, the plant is more drought-tolerant, but consistent watering promotes more vigorous vegetation.
Soil
This plant adapts to most soils, provided they drain well. Soil rich in organic matter (potting mix, compost) boosts growth. Avoid overly compact or oxygen-depleted soils that would hinder root development.
Pruning and cutting
Little pruning is necessary. If you want to encourage a compact form during the first year, remove flowers as they appear. In the second year, let a few flowering stems develop naturally for blooming and reproduction. Remove dead or damaged leaves as needed.
