Voss's golden chain tree is a hybrid created in 1874 by British nurseryman Laburnum watereri. Its exceptionally long flower clusters (up to 60 cm) make it spectacular in spring. Caution: all parts of the tree, especially seeds and pods, contain cytisine, an alkaloid toxic to domestic animals and livestock.
Where to buy it
Best planted in autumn so the roots settle in before summer, or in early spring once the frost has passed. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, October, November.
