Care
Exposure
Plant spiked koeleria in full sun for optimal growth and dense clumps. It tolerates part shade but will produce lighter, less compact foliage. Avoid heavily shaded areas where it will become thin and weak.
Soil and drainage
This grass prefers well-draining, light soils, even poor or stony ones. It adapts well to dry, rocky terrain. Enrich the soil very lightly at planting, then let it develop without heavy organic matter additions.
Watering
Water regularly during the first year of establishment, then gradually reduce. Once established, spiked koeleria tolerates drought well and only needs watering during prolonged dry spells. Avoid waterlogging, which can cause rot.
Pruning and cutting
Cut back faded clumps in late winter or very early spring, before new growth begins. You can reduce the clump to 5-10 cm above ground to encourage a compact habit and rejuvenate the plant. Regularly remove dead or damaged leaves.
Fertilizer
No fertilizer is necessary for this hardy, undemanding grass. A single light application of compost or balanced fertilizer in spring after pruning is sufficient. Avoid excess feeding, which promotes soft growth and reduces hardiness.
Diseases and pests
Spiked koeleria is generally disease-resistant with good drainage. The main threats are root rot from excessive moisture and, rarely, rust attacks. Ensure good air circulation and well-draining soil to prevent any problems.
Did you know?
Koeleria spicata is a grassland pioneer, long valued in Central Asia as an excellent quality forage for livestock. Its scientific name honors the German botanist Georg Ludwig Koeler (1764-1807). It's an ideal pioneer for dry gardens and ecological restoration projects, capable of colonizing arid terrain while offering beautiful airy texture from spring through autumn.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
