Expert tips
The key tip
White jasmine loves producing vigorous new shoots every year. Water well in the first season. Then, in temperate climates, rainfall is enough. Prune lightly after flowering.
The common mistake
People expect it to flower without giving it support: it flops into a shapeless tangle. Jasmine needs a structure (trellis, mesh) or it goes dormant.
The pro's trick
First tie the stems horizontally onto the support. This encourages branching and therefore more abundant flowering than if you let them point toward the sky.
Seasonal watch
Spider mites settle in during dry summers if the air is too stagnant. Spray the foliage early in the morning twice a week in July/August, especially in hot continental climates.
Care
Watering
Keep the soil regularly moist during growth and flowering, especially in hot and dry periods. Reduce watering in winter. Avoid standing water which promotes root rot. Watering two to three times per week is generally sufficient in summer.
Exposure
Place your white jasmine in a sunny or part-shaded position for optimal flowering. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is recommended. In very hot regions, light afternoon shade extends the flowering period.
Pruning and training
Prune after flowering to remove dead or tangled branches and maintain a balanced shape. Regularly tie young shoots to a support (trellis, pergola) to direct growth. This plant can be trained as an espalier or wound around a stake.
Fertilizer
Apply balanced fertilizer or one slightly rich in potassium in spring and early summer, approximately every 15 days. An application of organic matter (compost) at the base at the start of the season promotes good flowering.
Soil preparation
Prepare rich, well-structured and well-drained soil. Incorporate compost or peat when planting. White jasmine tolerates slight alkalinity but prefers neutral to slightly acidic pH.
Diseases and pests
Watch for spider mites, scale insects and whiteflies in dry or hot climates. Good air circulation and moderate humidity prevent most problems. Scale insects are treated with gentle sprays of soapy water.
Did you know?
White jasmine has crossed the centuries as a symbol of grace and elegance: in the Middle East and South Asia, its highly fragrant flowers are traditionally associated with purity and love. In the West, it has become indispensable in wedding floral arrangements. Its sweet and delicate fragrance, especially intense in the evening, makes it one of the most romantic climbing plants in gardens.
Where to buy it
Best planted in autumn so the roots settle in before summer, or in early spring once the frost has passed. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, October, November.
