Care

Aquatic submersion

Quillwort is a fully aquatic plant and must remain permanently submerged. It thrives in cold, well-oxygenated waters, ideally between 5 and 15 °C. In an aquarium or pond, maintain a depth of 20 to 40 cm above the plant. Avoid stagnant water; slight movement and good filtration promote its growth.

Light and clarity

This fern prefers bright exposure but without intense direct sunlight. It grows better in clear water where light penetrates well to the bottom. In an outdoor pond, choose a semi-shaded area; in an aquarium, moderate lighting (8 to 10 hours per day) is sufficient. Turbid or overly dark water significantly slows its growth.

Substrate and anchoring

Plant the quillwort in fine, slightly nutritive substrate: fine sand, aquatic soil or a mix of peat and sand. The plant roots slowly in the soil and draws its nutrients from it. Avoid overly compacted substrates; a porous medium promotes root absorption and water circulation.

Nutrition

Quillwort generally thrives on the nutrients present in the water and substrate. In very poor environments (aquariums without biofilm), a diluted liquid fertiliser for aquatic plants, applied monthly, can support growth. Do not overload the water with nutrients, as this plant favours oligotrophic (poor) environments.

Health prevention

Quillwort is robust but sensitive to polluted water, invasive algae and drastic temperature changes. Excess nutrients promote algal proliferation that smothers it. Maintain clear water, monitor water chemistry and avoid introducing invasive species. Good aeration prevents basal rot.

Maintenance and removal

This fern reproduces very slowly and requires virtually no pruning. Remove only dead or damaged fronds. Gently pinch off yellowed leaves at the base to avoid damaging the crown. Avoid any rough handling; quillwort prefers stability and thrives when left undisturbed.

Did you know?

Quillwort is one of the most remarkable living fossils: its genus, Isoetes, has existed since the Carboniferous period (over 300 million years ago) virtually unchanged. In Europe, it survives only in very cold and oligotrophic lakes, notably in Scandinavia and the Alps, and its range is shrinking due to water eutrophication and climate warming, making it a sentinel species for the health of lacustrine ecosystems.

Where to buy it

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
