Care
Watering
During spring growth and before blooming, keep the soil moist without excess water. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging, as the bulb dreads prolonged moisture. After flowering, gradually reduce watering until the foliage completely dries out in summer.
Light Exposure
Prefer partial shade, typically under trees or in a woodland setting. Woodland hyacinths tolerate partial to full shade as well. They appreciate the gentle spring sun before trees leaf out.
Soil
Enrich the soil with compost or humus before planting. Well-drained soil is essential to prevent bulb rot in winter. Add sand or gravel if the soil is too compact.
Fertilizing
Fertilizer is generally unnecessary if the soil is enriched at planting time. To support future flowering, apply bone meal or low-nitrogen fertilizer in autumn when planting the bulbs.
Pruning and Maintenance
No pruning is required. Let the foliage yellow naturally after flowering before removing it, as it replenishes the bulb. You can leave the leaves to decompose in place or remove them once completely dried out.
Diseases and Pests
Woodland hyacinths are generally very resistant. Watch for bulb rot from excessive winter moisture. Snails and slugs may damage young shoots in spring; mulching or physical barriers will deter them effectively.
Did you know?
Once massively harvested in European forests to adorn gardens and bouquets, the woodland hyacinth nearly disappeared in the wild. Now protected by law in many countries, it symbolizes the importance of forest biodiversity today. Its Latin name 'non-scripta' means 'unwritten,' as it was long confused with other hyacinths.
Where to buy it
Plant the bulbs in autumn for spring flowering. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: from September to November.
