Care
Light Exposure
Water horsetail thrives in full sun for optimal growth, but tolerates partial shade well. In shaded areas, it remains more compact but its vigor decreases. Choose a sunny spot in your pond or water feature.
Aquatic Environment
This plant is cultivated partially submerged or completely submerged in fresh water, in a pond, water body, or aquarium. The water must remain cool and well-oxygenated. It adapts to various depths (10 to 50 cm depending on the variety and conditions).
Substrate and Soil
Install it on soil rich in organic matter, aquatic mud, or silt. A layer of nutritive soil mix 5 to 10 cm below the surface promotes better rooting. It tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH levels.
Fertilizer
In an established pond, nutrients from the sediment and organic debris are often sufficient. In an aquarium or very clear water, a monthly application of balanced liquid fertilizer encourages growth. Avoid overdosing, which can promote algae growth.
Pruning and Cutting
Regularly remove dead or yellowing stems to maintain shape and encourage branching. In late summer, cut back faded foliage to a few centimeters above the soil or substrate to make room for new shoots.
Diseases and Pests
Water horsetail is generally very robust. Watch for mold in stagnant water or water too rich in organic matter. Good water circulation and oxygenation prevent most problems.

Its remarkable adaptability to different environments (aquatic, semi-aquatic, even in brackish water) makes it one of the few herbaceous plants capable of colonizing buffer zones between land and water, playing a crucial ecological role for aquatic life and dragonfly larvae.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
