Expert tips
The key tip
The common mistake
The pro's trick
Care
Watering
Water regularly during the growing season (spring-summer), letting the substrate dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in fall-winter. It prefers dry spells to waterlogging: the roots fear suffocation. Use room-temperature water, preferably filtered.
Light exposure
Place it in bright, indirect light, away from direct sun rays that can scorch the leaves. It tolerates partial shade but loses compactness in it. Avoid prolonged dark areas that slow its growth. Position it near a window facing east or west for best results.
Pruning and pinching
Pinch the tips of young stems to encourage a bushy, branched habit. Prune dead or misplaced branches in spring. It tolerates pruning well and can be reshaped as you wish. Regularly remove yellowed or damaged leaves at the base.
Fertilizer
Apply a balanced fertilizer every 15 to 20 days during the growing period (April to September). Reduce or stop fertilizing in winter when growth slows. Follow recommended dosages to avoid harmful mineral salt buildup on the roots.
Substrate and repotting
Use light, well-draining potting mix: combine universal potting soil, fine bark, and perlite in equal parts. Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring if roots emerge from the pot. Make sure not to compact the substrate to preserve aeration.
Pests and diseases
Watch for spider mites, especially in dry indoor air. Regular misting of the foliage prevents their appearance. Also beware of mealybugs: immediately isolate any infested plant. Root rot occurs with excessive watering: let it dry before watering again.
Did you know?
Schefflera arboricola earned the nickname "Umbrella Tree" because of the umbrella-like arrangement of its compound leaflets. Very popular in Asia, this plant is also reputed to purify indoor air according to Feng Shui, though no scientific certainty has established this.
Where to buy it
Best planted in autumn so the roots settle in before summer, or in early spring once the frost has passed. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, October, November.
