Expert tips
The key tip
The common mistake
The pro's trick
Care
Watering
Keep the soil constantly moist but without water pooling. Water with soft water (filtered or rainwater) at room temperature, as this plant dislikes hard water. Reduce watering frequency slightly in winter, but don't let the substrate dry out completely.
Light and exposure
Place it in indirect light, away from direct sunlight which fades the leaves. It appreciates moderate and consistent brightness. Avoid cold drafts and dry heat sources (radiators).
Substrate
Use rich, light and well-draining potting soil, enriched with peat or coconut fiber. Adding perlite or charcoal will improve aeration. This plant prefers slightly acidic to neutral substrate.
Nutrition
Apply balanced, diluted fertilizer every 15 days or so, from spring to autumn. Reduce feeding in winter. Choose formulas low in lime to respect its natural preferences.
Pruning and cleaning
Remove dead or damaged leaves at the base of the petiole. Gentle cleaning of the leaves with a damp cloth will maintain their natural shine. Pruning is only necessary to balance the shape.
Pests and diseases
Beware of spider mites and mealybugs, favored by dry air. Inspect the undersides of leaves regularly. Increase ambient humidity through frequent misting and maintain good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
Did you know?
Goeppertia sanderiana is named after the Greek botanist Goeppert and British nurseryman Sander, a passionate collector of exotic plants. Its leaves have the remarkable ability to fold at night (nyctinasty), which inspired its popular nickname of "Prayer Plant" — a visible and fascinating movement that has captivated collectors since the 19th century.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
