Care
Watering
Keep the substrate moist but never waterlogged, as Gleichenia hates root asphyxiation. Water regularly during the growing season (spring-summer), reducing slightly in autumn-winter. Rainwater or filtered water is ideal for this fern, which is sensitive to water quality.
Light exposure
Place your Gleichenia dicarpa in partial shade or light shade, away from direct sunlight which would scorch its delicate fronds. A location with indirect, airy light promotes harmonious growth. Avoid drying draughts.
Pruning and maintenance
Regularly remove dead, damaged or yellowed fronds at the base of the plant to encourage air circulation. No drastic pruning is necessary; this fern unfurls naturally. Gentle cleaning of the fronds (with a damp cloth) keeps it in good health.
Fertilizer
Apply a balanced, diluted fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season (spring-summer). Prefer light feeding rather than excessive amounts, as ferns are sensitive to mineral salt accumulation. Stop feeding in autumn-winter.
Soil and substrate
Use a very well-draining mix, made up of peat (or coco fibre), perlite and leaf mould or fine bark. Ensure no water stagnates at the bottom of the pot; perfect drainage is crucial to prevent root rot.
Diseases and pests
Watch out for spider mites and mealybugs, which can colonize dried fronds. Mist regularly with fine water to increase humidity and prevent these pests. Root rot appears with overwatering: ensure impeccable drainage and adequate ventilation.
Did you know?
Gleichenia dicarpa is one of the oldest living ferns, belonging to a lineage virtually unchanged since the Jurassic (over 180 million years ago). Its dichotomously branched fronds (hence its scientific name 'dicarpa') give it a prehistoric appearance, so it's sometimes cultivated by enthusiasts of 'living fossil' plants.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
