Care
Watering
Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged during the growing season. Space out waterings in winter while keeping the soil slightly moist. Use room-temperature water and, if possible, water that is not hard or calcareous. Drainage must be excellent to prevent root rot.
Light exposure
Position your palm in indirect light, away from direct sun rays which can scorch the foliage. It tolerates partial shade, which is ideal for indoor cultivation near a shaded window. Avoid areas that are too dark as they slow growth.
Pruning and cleaning
Remove only dead or damaged fronds (leaves) at their base. Gently clean the leaves with a damp cloth to promote photosynthesis. Avoid commercial leaf shine products as they can damage the foliage.
Fertiliser
Apply a balanced diluted fertiliser monthly during the growing season (spring-summer). Reduce applications in autumn and stop in winter. Prefer a specific palm fertiliser if available, one that is rich in potassium.
Substrate and repotting
Use a rich organic matter mix: indoor plant potting soil combined with peat or coco fibre, along with coarse sand or perlite for drainage. Repot every 2-3 years in spring using a slightly larger pot.
Pests and diseases
Watch for spider mites and mealybugs, particularly in dry indoor conditions. Treat with regular water sprays or a mild insecticide if needed. Powdery mildew can appear with excessive humidity and poor air circulation; improve air flow.

The Geonoma genus includes around 30 species of small palms highly valued by Amazonian indigenous peoples, who cultivate them near their homes for decoration and traditional uses of the leaves. Geonoma macrostachys is among the most compact species, making it a favourite for modern indoor gardens in Europe and North America since the 1970s.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring, once all risk of frost has gone. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: from April to June.
