Care
Watering
Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged: water regularly during the growing season (spring-summer) and reduce slightly in winter. Check that drainage is good to prevent root rot. Prefer lukewarm water and, if possible, soft water low in lime. Mist the foliage to increase humidity.
Light and exposure
Place your Geonoma in filtered, indirect light away from intense direct sun. It thrives in bright, filtered indirect light, typical of tropical understory conditions. Avoid dark locations which slow growth. An exposure near an east or west-facing window is ideal indoors.
Soil and substrate
Use a rich, light-textured mix: general-purpose potting soil enriched with perlite or sphagnum to improve drainage. A slightly acidic pH (6 to 7) is preferred. Partially renew the substrate every 2-3 years when repotting in spring.
Fertilizing
Apply a balanced fertilizer (similar NPK) diluted during the growing season, approximately once monthly from April to September. Reduce applications in fall and stop in winter. Micronutrient applications can prevent iron or magnesium deficiencies.
Pruning and maintenance
Regularly remove dead or damaged leaves at the base of the petiole. Pinch back young leaves if needed to encourage branching if the habit appears too leggy. No severe pruning required; the palm will structure its own growth naturally.
Diseases and pests
Watch for spider mites and scale insects, particularly in dry air. Yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering, mineral deficiency, or insufficient light. Maintain good humidity and ensure regular air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
Did you know?
Geonoma deversa is a slender palm highly valued by houseplant collectors for its graceful, compact habit. In South America, Geonomas are called "understory palms" because they naturally grow beneath the canopy of humid tropical rainforests, making them exceptionally well-adapted to the partial shade and constant humidity conditions of modern homes.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring, once all risk of frost has gone. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: from April to June.
