Care
Exposure
Spatulate cottonweed appreciates well-lit locations, ideally in full sun for 6 to 8 hours per day. It tolerates shade poorly and will become leggy if light is insufficient. Choose an open and bright spot to encourage compact growth and abundant flowering.
Soil
This plant prefers well-drained, light and rather dry soils. Potting soil for Mediterranean plants or a sandy mix works perfectly. Avoid overly rich or moist soils that would promote root rot.
Watering
Water moderately, especially during the growing period. Let the soil dry between waterings. Once established, cottonweed is fairly tolerant of drought thanks to its downy foliage which limits evaporation. Reduce watering in autumn and winter.
Fertilizer
A balanced fertilizer application once at the start of growth is generally sufficient. This herb is not very demanding in terms of nutrients. Avoid excess nitrogen which would favor foliage at the expense of flowering.
Pruning and maintenance
Pruning is not essential. You can pinch young plants to encourage denser branching and a more compact shape. Remove faded flowers to extend flowering and maintain an attractive form.
Diseases and pests
Generally little susceptible to diseases if watering is well controlled. Excess humidity can promote rot. Watch for aphids in warm growing conditions. Good air circulation and optimal drainage prevent most problems.
