Care
Watering
Rock fescue is very tolerant of drought once established. During the young planting phase, water moderately to promote root development. Avoid excess moisture, particularly in winter, which can cause foliage rot.
Exposure
Plant rock fescue in full sun to achieve its optimal blue-grey hue and maximum density. It tolerates partial shade, but its form will be less compact and its color less pronounced.
Soil
Opt for well-drained, dry, poor and chalky soil. This grass thrives in rocky terrain or on slopes. Improve drainage with sand or gravel if your soil retains too much moisture.
Pruning and cutting
Comb or lightly cut the foliage in late winter (February-March) to remove dry parts and rejuvenate the clump. Avoid severe pruning that could weaken the plant. Regular combing is usually sufficient.
Fertilizer
No fertilizer is needed, as rock fescue prefers poor soils. Excess nitrogen can weaken the plant and reduce its characteristic color.
Diseases and pests
This grass is very resistant. The main risks involve root rot if there is excess moisture in winter. Ensure optimal drainage to prevent these problems and avoid planting in marshy areas.
